Bas Groot and Sietske van der Werf founded Halsten in 2013, with locations in Amsterdam and Eindhoven. This was followed in 2019 by the opening of a branch in Rotterdam. Before Halsten, both Bas and Sietske started their own companies in the legal market. Halsten is the result of a merger of these companies and was created based on the joint working experiences and insights they gained in traditional law, business administration, HR and corporate legal departments.

In 2014 ‘Halsten Advocaten’ was founded. Eliane Koelmans (head of Corporate/M&A) and Roel Hakvoort (head of Legal Tech) later joined the management team and currently head Halsten together with Bas. Sietske was part of the management team until early 2024, after which she went her own way.

In September 2023, Halsten opened a fourth location in Belgium, marking the first step outside the Dutch borders.

Bas Groot started his career in the legal profession at a Zuidas firm. After six years, he made the switch to the corporate legal side as a self-employed lawyer and followed a Master of Science in Business Administration in the evenings. Together with Sietske, he founded Halsten in 2013 and has since been leading the organisation as one of its managing partners. He also actively participates in the Halsten practice as general and project counsel, supporting clients with broad legal advice, with a specific focus on (inter)national contracting and renewable energy projects and cases.

Eliane Koelmans became a co-shareholder in 2019. With Eliane, a lot of knowledge and experience came on board. Within Halsten, Eliane is responsible for further building and expanding the M&A practice and has always been closely involved in business operations. After the departure of co-founder Sietske van der Werf in 2024, she moved more to the forefront of business operations and became responsible for HR. Before her time at Halsten, she was managing director at Spigthoff and partner at Boer & Croon, where she was responsible for the organisation of the office and active in corporate law and M&A.

Roel Hakvoort has been a valuable member of the Halsten team since 2016. As the Head of Legal Operations & Technology, he is responsible for optimising legal business processes and IT security. With a strong technical background in Industrial Engineering and Management (TU Delft), he uses his expertise both for our clients and internally at Halsten. Roel closely follows the latest innovations in the legal domain and ensures that this knowledge benefits both Halsten and its clients. Thanks to his experience in project management and consulting, gained at APG and Stedin among others, he knows how to effectively implement this knowledge at the intersection of business and IT. He works closely with legal colleagues to develop the best solutions, using Legal Tech and new processes and practices. This enables Halsten to offer its clients a complete service package.
